Email recieved from Conservative Party on 26th June 2025

The Conservative Party does not know what being in opposition means.

This is the conclusion to be drawn from the above email, sent by the Conservatives today to their members under the name of Mel Stride, the Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer.

The subject is whether, and under what circumstances, Conservative MPs will support an amendment to a Parliamentary bill regarding the reduction of certain benefit payments.

The Labour Party is facing a major rebellion from its own MPs, on such scale that the government’s legislation could be defeated.

Instead of working to ensure that occurs, we have an email from The Conservative Party incorporating the acme of sophistry, and being indicative of the party leadership’s utter stupdity and distance from the interests of their supporters, and from the national interest.

Any defeat for Labour on anything is in the national interest, and in the interest of Conservative supporters.

What part of being in Opposition does The Conservative Party not understand?

It isn’t up to them to formulate policy, or negotiate with a government that has a massive overall majority.

It is their role to oppose. Opposition MPs go into the Nay lobby whenever a government proposal is voted on. It’s up to Labour, LibDem, SNP, Green et al MPs to decide whether they do the same.

Still less is it up to them to dig Keir Starmer, Rt Hon Rachel Reeves and The Labour Party out of a hole of their own making.

This particular case offers a chance to hole Starmer below the waterline, possibly get Reeves to resign, and send Labour into a tailspin. All of that is in the national interest according to this Tory party member.

If The Conservative Party saves Starmer’s bacon in this case, what then? What if things do get better and Labour Party (UK) gets re-elected?

Then the The Conservative Party has acted as a Labour enabler.

In the best case we are looking at a minor reversal within just one of the disastrous set of policies in the arsenal of Labour Party (UK), which has amounted to the launching of a multi-pronged civil war against the UK generally and the (supposed) Tory voter base in particular.

If Keir Starmer and Rt Hon Rachel Reeves are hanging to the ledge by the fingertips in this case, it is the duty of The Conservative Party, and in the national interest, for the Tories to stamp on their hands.
